The Magnificat, one of the oldest and most venerated hymns in the Christian tradition, echoes the words of Mary, mother of Jesus, as she praises God for bringing the Messiah into the world. Over the centuries, this hymn has been interpreted by many illustrious composers. Now, the Lexington Singers are honored to present the premiere of a new Magnificat by Kentucky composer Johnie Dean as part of their upcoming concert “The Light Within Us.” In jubilant rhythms and soaring melodies, Johnie, who is also a Lexington Singers member, has brought this ancient hymn to new and glorious life.
The talents of another Singers member, photographer Sally Horowitz, will also be on display as the music is accompanied by a dynamic series of her nature photographs. From stunning, light-washed landscapes to the tiniest detail of a butterfly’s wing in the sunlight, Sally’s beautiful work truly exemplifies this concert’s theme! |
